BSNL and RealNetworks tie up to provide “emoticonSMS”

BSNL and RealNetworks tie up to provide “emoticonSMS” Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), the leading Indian public sector company providing Telecommunication service in India has announced a tie up with RealNetworks, the digital entertainment services company for providing “emoticonSMS” service of RealNetworks in India.

What is this “emoticonSMS”, which will be available to around 30 million Indians (BSNL subscribers) by the year end!! I searched around the net, but couldn’t find some exact info about this service. However, what I understood is that, when a BSNL subscriber activates this service, it automatically converts his or her SMS text messages into SMS emoticons using keyword recognition technology. That is the symbols like [: ) ] will be converted into emoticons (smilies) [:)].

Here, subscribers will have a choice from 4,000 emoticons in 500 themes making every personalized message unique in itself.

“Through its global client roster, Real has clearly demonstrated its ability to serve our customer base with new and cutting edge features,” said a senior BSNL official. “Delivering a premium experience to our subscribers has always been our primary goal, and working with Real to deliver emoticonSMS helps us continue providing the latest in personalization services while realizing benefits to our bottom line.”

It is of course a Value Added service. That means you would have to pay extra, if you want to use it.
