Temporary ban on certain BlackBerry mobiles - India

Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal asked the mobile service providers to stop offers for certain BlackBerry mobiles untill proper monitoring system is implemented.

“The government has issued instructions to all mobile service providers, inter alia asking them not to connect or provide/run certain BlackBerry services unless the required monitoring systems are in place,” Jaiswal said.

The calls and e-mails exchanged within BlackBerry handsets are through Canada servers . India has asked Research in Motion (RIM), the licensor of BlackBerry, which covers over 12 million users globally, to route all its calls and e-mails through Indian servers.This change is to be implemented to reduce the terrorist activites.

BlackBerry services are provided in India by Airtel, Vodafone, BPL and Reliance Communications. BlackBerry services started in October 2004.
